How can my boyfriend afford to pay for the amount of money he owes in a car accident?

My boyfriend was involved in a car accident last October. He just received a letter from the insurance agent for the other driver stating that he was being sued for $60,000 dollars. He contacted his insurance company and was told that his insurance canceled 3 days before the accident, he did not receive any type of notice telling him that his insurance was going to be canceled nor did he receive notice from the NCDMV to surrender tag due to failure to maintain insurance . He does not have the money to pay if he loses the case nor the money to pay an attorney. I am not sure of statute of limitations in NC or his rights or what he should do.
